New Thermal Battery Outperforms Current Battery Technology

A company called CCT Energy Storage unveiled the very first high-density thermal battery, which outperforms lithium-ion and lead-acid batteries many times over. Called a Thermal Energy Device (TED), the modular unit stores electricity as latent heat, which can be converted back into energy on demand. A standard TED unit can store 1.2 megawatt-hours of energy and has a minimum life expectancy of 20 years. TEDs can accept any type of electricity such as solar, wind, hydro and can be charged and discharged simultaneously. Other advantages to these systems are they require very little maintenance, are 100 percent recyclable, and cost 25% less than an equivalent lithium-ion setup. Read the full article.
